It’s Okay to Quit Sometimes: Why Letting Go Can Be a Sign of Strength – By Madhavi Gandhi

Hello my pretty ladies,

I am Madhavi Gandhi, a corporate professional by day and someone who finds joy in cooking and experimenting with flavours at home. From childhood, I have always tried to give my best in everything I did. Whether it was academics, sports, creative activities, or helping out at home, I pushed myself to do things with sincerity. Over time, people around me noticed this effort and often appreciated it. Recognition became something I was used to receiving, even for small wins.

But life has a way of teaching us lessons that effort alone cannot solve. There comes a phase when trying endlessly does not necessarily lead to the outcome we expect. This blog is about that phase of my life. I want to share what I experienced, how I navigated it, and why I eventually realised that sometimes quitting is not weakness. In many situations, it can actually be a decision rooted in courage, self-awareness, and personal growth.

The Idea of “Never Quitting” That We Grow Up With

Most of us grow up hearing the same advice from parents, teachers, and mentors: “try, try, but don’t cry!”. The intention behind this message has always been positive. It encourages resilience and reminds us that persistence often leads to success. However, somewhere along the way many of us internalise an unintended belief. We begin to feel that stopping means failure and that quitting reflects weakness. Even taking a step back can start to feel like we are letting ourselves down.

In reality, persistence only makes sense when the path still feels meaningful. If your work excites you, when your goals challenge you in a healthy way, and when your efforts contribute to growth or fulfillments, then continuing to push forward can be deeply rewarding.

Many inspiring success stories demonstrate this kind of perseverance. I remember reading the Harry Potter books as a child and later discovering that the author, J.K. Rowling, had faced several rejections before her manuscript was finally accepted. The series that millions of people around the world love today almost never reached readers because of those early “no’s.” Her journey reminds us that persistence is powerful when you truly believe in the path you are walking.

Recognising When Letting Go Is the Healthier Choice

At the same time, there are moments in life when continuing to push forward begins to take a toll on our mental and emotional well-being. When a situation consistently drains your energy, confidence, or peace of mind, it becomes important to pause and reflect.

I experienced a phase like this in my own professional journey. There was a time when my work environment and responsibilities started to feel increasingly overwhelming. Like many people, I initially believed that the only solution was to keep trying harder and to push through the challenges.

But over time I realised that remaining in that situation was affecting my peace of mind more than I had acknowledged. After a great deal of reflection, I made the difficult decision to step away from that role, even though I did not have another opportunity lined up at the time.

Many people around me questioned that decision, and their concern was understandable because uncertainty can feel uncomfortable. But deep down, I knew that stepping away was the right choice for my well-being. Looking back today, I understand that protecting your peace is not a sign of failure but an act of self-awareness.

Why Quitting Feels So Difficult

Even when we know something is not right for us, making the decision to walk away can feel incredibly difficult and much of this hesitation comes from fear. We worry about being judged by others. We fear the uncertainty that comes with change. We wonder whether we might regret the decision later.

Our minds prefer familiarity because it feels safe and predictable. Thus, even if a situation feels uncomfortable, it is still a “known territory”. The unknown, on the other hand, can feel intimidating.

When facing such confusion between “quitting” and “trying harder”, ask yourself the following questions:

  • Is the situation contributing positively to your life or is it constantly draining your energy?
  • Are you holding on because you genuinely believe in it, or because you are afraid of changing direction?
  • Are you prioritising expectations over your own peace of mind?

Reflecting on these questions often brings clarity. Sometimes the answers reveal that stepping away is not an act of defeat but a step toward a healthier and more balanced life.

Choosing Yourself, Starting Again, and Moving Forward

Quitting is often misunderstood because it is associated with giving up. In reality, there are situations where stepping away can be one of the most responsible and thoughtful decisions you make.

Letting go can protect your emotional well-being, remove you from environments that no longer align with your values, and create space for new opportunities. It can also give you the clarity required to rebuild your confidence and move forward with a renewed sense of purpose.

Taking a pause does not always mean falling behind. Sometimes stepping back allows you to reflect, recharge, and return with greater focus and strength. Starting again is not something to be ashamed of. Every experience you carry with you becomes part of your growth.

We often celebrate hustle and persistence, but what we need to understand is that not every battle needs to be fought endlessly. Growth sometimes begins with the courage to walk away and choose a different path. You are allowed to change your mind. You are allowed to outgrow situations. And you are allowed to choose what truly serves you.

A Message to All the Ladies Reading

To all the pretty ladies reading this, please remember that life does not come with a fixed rulebook. Each journey is unique, and every person moves through challenges in their own way. Your worth is not measured by how long you stay in situations that no longer feel right. It is reflected in the courage you show when you choose your well-being and honour your peace.

Trust your instincts, respect your journey, and have faith that every step you take is guiding you toward something meaningful.

Sometimes choosing yourself is the bravest decision you will ever make.

With love, Madhavi Gandhi
